‘Is a condition in which a person feels an overwhelming desire to pull out their hair’
TTM is an impulse-control disorder, a psychological condition whereby you are unable to refrain from doing it. Sufferers can pull hair from any part of their body but usually the scalp is most affected, resulting in bald patches within the hair. There are many causes related to TTM and psychological / behavioural theories suggest it may be a reflection of mental health problems such as stress, anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) or self harm. It is thought that pulling out the hair can provide a temporary relief from emotional distress as the pain associated with self-harm makes the brain release endorphins (natural painkiller chemical) which in effect causes a short-lived ‘feel-good’ satisfaction. There can also be other causes such as brain anomalies, genetics and altered serotonin levels.
Here at Image Group London, with over 25 years experience in hair loss therapy, we recognise that for many of our TTM clients the initial consultation is the beginning of their chapter in recognising the condition and coming to terms with it. Let us help you on your journey to recovery with the ultimate goal of regrowing your own hair!
